Katelyn McKay named Å·±¦ÌåÓý 2025 Student of the YearÌý

SOUTH PORTLAND – Katelyn McKay has been named Å·±¦ÌåÓý’s (Å·±¦ÌåÓý) 2025 Student of the Year in recognition of their resilience, leadership, academic commitment, and dedication to personal and community growth. Katelyn Mckay

Katelyn’s Å·±¦ÌåÓý journey began after a high school visit to campus opened their eyes to the possibilities of a community college education. They enrolled right out of high school with support from a mentor who encouraged them to consider Å·±¦ÌåÓý.Ìý

Although Katelyn encountered life challenges that required a temporary break from school, they returned to Å·±¦ÌåÓý with a renewed drive and deepened purpose. They found a sense of belonging and encouragement from staff and faculty in student life and TRIO programs.Ìý

Since then, they have been an engaged member of the College community and credit Å·±¦ÌåÓý with helping to nourish their personal development.Ìý

“To me, Å·±¦ÌåÓý is a safe haven—a place for second chances filled with both support and the opportunity to offer support to others. It’s where I’ve been able to explore my interests, connect with the community, and grow through every experience and challenge,” Katelyn said.Ìý

Katelyn is currently focused on EMT and firefighting classes, while they remain open to exploring other Å·±¦ÌåÓý programs to pursue their passions.Ìý

Outside the classroom, Katelyn’s interests reflect their multifaceted personality. They play on the Maine Mayhem Women’s Football team and enjoy creative outlets such as writing, art, Dance Dance Revolution video games, and spending time in nature. They also enjoy hands-on work like fixing small motors and giving back through community volunteering wherever help is needed.Ìý

Katelyn will be formally recognized during a Maine Community College System event on Wednesday, April 23, honoring Students of the Year from across the state. Each recipient will receive a $1,000 John and Jana Lapoint Leadership Award.Ìý

Katelyn’s experience at Å·±¦ÌåÓý exemplifies the power of support, determination, and community in shaping student success. Their story reflects the College’s mission to help students overcome barriers and reach their full potential.Ìý
